If you’ve stumbled on this post searching for information on how to help a friend or loved one who is expecting a child with DS, there is a wonderful resource for you! One of my most favorite resources is Down Syndrome Pregnancy. They recently published a booklet on this very topic and it is full of information.
The most important thing is to tell your loved one that he or she has your full support, that their child will be welcomed and loved, and that you will be there for them. Listen to your loved one. Respect his or her emotional state.
Included in the booklet is information on DS, the emotions of the mother, and a section on commonly made mistakes. Even if you don’t have someone in your life expecting a baby with DS, the information is useful in helping a loved one through an unexpected pre-natal or post-natal diagnosis.
Love, Listen, Learn.
